Combat cravings by eating? With cyclodextrins you can. These cyclic sugar molecules bind fat, balance your blood sugar levels and serve as soluble fiber. One Australian company has used these findings to create CaloreaseTM, a dietary supplement which it has introduced onto the US market.
When a mother calms her restless, fussy child with a bit of bread, she is taking advantage of the fact that starches are basically nothing more than biopolymeric sugar. As the child munches along, saliva cleaves the starch molecules, turning chains of sugars (polysaccharides) into simple sugars (monosaccharides) – the latter tastes sweet, and the child calms down. This phenomenon makes it all the more surprising that starch molecules, of all things, are reportedly capable of balancing our blood sugar levels. But that’s exactly what cyclodextrins can do. Cyclodextrins are starch molecules made up of repeating glucose units that are linked together in a ring to form a central cavity – a structure that allows them to reversibly incorporate other substances such as vitamins or fat molecules. Tests conducted by WACKER researchers have shown that blood glucose levels do not rise as dramatically and stay at a lower level longer when subjects consumed bread along with alpha(cyclo)dextrin. “Alphadextrins lower an individual’s glycemic index, which is an indicator of how carbohydrate-containing foods affect blood sugar,” explains Dr. Helmut Reuscher, Sales Director for the Americas and Technical Director for Nutrition at WACKER BIOSOLUTIONS. A low glycemic index means that blood glucose and/or insulin spikes will be less extreme, which protects the metabolic and circulatory systems. “Blood sugar doesn’t rise as quickly and only does so to a certain level, where it then remains for some time.”
